-Favorite thing about wrestling?
My favorite thing about wrestling is the lessons it teaches you, not just how to wrestle - but the lessons on discipline and working hard. Wrestling has taught me how to navigate life better, even if your life is up or down, you have to keep going and persevere.
-Favorite past wrestler/coach?
My favorite past wrestler would definitely have to be my old wrestling partner, Gabriel Lopez. Wrestling with him taught me how to be a better person and look for the good in people - no matter what. Although he graduated when I was a sophomore, I will never forget the lessons he taught me in the years that we had wrestled and grown together since middle school.
-Goal for wrestling, life, and career?
My goal for wrestling is improve my skills and work ethic, and overall work towards a state championship for my school. I want to be able to take my dedication and skills from wrestling into my future to benefit my community. I would like to become a police officer because I like serving and protecting others. For my life, I hope to one day have a family of my own and be a good father and husband.
-If you could teach a younger wrestler one thing, what would it be?
If I were to teach one thing, without a doubt it would be discipline. You cannot get anywhere in life without consistency and discipline. Having this skill will take you far through wrestling and life.
-You have had a lot of success in both wrestling and football but you have battled through some injuries. Could you touch on how you have worked through those and still had a great attitude and been very successful?
I have had to work on not over-working myself and learning to cater to my boundaries while also pushing myself. Another important thing would be continuing to do recovery and taking care of my body - especially throughout injuries. I like to remind myself where I started as a freshman and where I came from and just remembering my growth as a wrestler. I think success comes from hard work, dedication, and overcoming obstacles, not just winning a match.
-Douglas has had a couple of down years by their standards but this year looks to be different. Can you talk about what is different this year compared to the last couple years?
Well, this year we have all had the mindset and determination to succeed. I think we as a team, know that we can win if we all put in the work. The last couple of years, I feel like we lost motivation and I think we can definitely come back from that. The coaches have been pushing us to be very well conditioned and have helped us put in the constant work to do well. I am optimistic and feel like we will do well this year.
