Roany Proffit from Kemmerer is our next Featured Wrestler! Roany is coming off of his 4th Ron Thon Title and is working toward his 4th State Title. He is one of the best that our state has produced and he had some very insightful answers! Thanks for taking the time to do the interview and we wish you the best of luck in the future!!
-Favorite thing about wrestling?
My favorite thing about wrestling is that you get out of it what you put in. Time and effort are really the only ways you can get good at the sport.
-Favorite past wrestler/coach?
Picking a favorite coach would almost be impossible because I’ve been coached up a lot by my brother, dad, middle school, and high school coaches. It really did take a whole village of people to get me to where I am today.
-Goal for wrestling, life, and career?
My goals for wrestling would be to finish off the season with my fourth state title at least. I’m not completely sure what wrestling holds for me past high school, but I do know that what I’ve learned will benefit my future decisions and actions. My life goal would be to inspire others to go out and get what they want despite all of the challenges that are put into their way. Career goals are still undetermined, but I would like to continue the cowboy way of life that has been passed down many generations in my family.
-If you could teach a younger wrestler one thing, what would it be?
If I were to teach any younger wrestlers anything, it would be that nothing comes easy. Everything I’ve earned was earned years ahead during preparation and it took a lot of losing in order to get the wins. In my mind I was already a four timer, I just needed to go and show everyone what I had visualized since my first Ron thon title.
-Growing up in a wrestling family and having Donny as your older brother, can you talk about how that has shaped you as a wrestler and in life?
Having the background with a wrestling family has definitely shaped me for the better. I used to follow my brother around during his high school career and made a promise to myself that I will strive to outgrow his footsteps. I learned from my brother’s mistakes and a lot of his accomplishments. His career was a big guideline and measuring tool for my own success. I still look up to him and want to be like him in a lot of ways. It’s always a good time to work with him on the ranch or in the room which I think betters both of us as individuals and athletes.
-Could you touch on the culture that has been built in Kemmerer and possibly the driving forces behind that culture?
A huge part of our culture in kemmerer has been set by the past athletes that still come into the room and work with us. Another big piece is the coaching in our room. The coaches always believe in us whether or not we believe in ourselves. All of the people that are in there drive us to succeed and see little wins in every thing that we do. We never work in that room with the thought of losing on our minds and it is just an amazing atmosphere to step into.
-Anything else that you would like to add or touch on?
Other things that I would like to add is I have a record of 167-17 in my high school career after Ron thon. As of right now I am sitting #3 for the most career wins in kemmerer wrestling. The Proffit name holds the most state titles per name in the state of Wyoming.
